Jason Calacanis is a selfish SOB

Update: Here is a link to what Jason is upt to, calling it Media Philanthropy
Today’s Gillmor Gang was probably the weirdest ever.

Jason Calacanis got called a selfish son of a bitch for trying to raise money to send under-privileged kids to private schools.

Hmm. I never looked at scholarships that way before.

I think I’ll stop giving to charity too, and let the government worry about it.

Well, I commend you on a great attempt to do some good. Your heart is in the right place.

I’m free of RSS overload!

I just had a great moment.

Over 500 unread items in my newsreader and I just clicked “Mark All As Read”

Ahhhh. I’ve come a long way to be able to do that. I know I missed some goodies, but I don’t care.

How the hell does this post go from newspapers to Jabber and Second Life

Jonathan, over at Web 2.0 newspapers , adds a bit to the argument traveling around lately about newspapers and communities. I highly doubt there is person reading his blog or this one who doesn’t think he’s right.
It’s funny, because even the most clueless newspaper people I know wouldn’t deny that online community is important, even if they weren’t sure what it meant.

As I mention in a comment on Jonathan’s post, the difference between now and five years ago, when I was yelling “community!” at my newspaper, is this.

Then, we should have been trying to create a community. Now, we need to think about joining them.

Then, slashdot. Now, blogosphere. Next, Jabber.

Whuh? That’s right, folks. Like Stowe Boyd (who graciously auctioned www.podosphere.com off to me -yeehah) says, :”The Buddylist is the Center of the Universe” .

And Gtalk supports Jabber, and all players will eventually melt down to interop, and any social network can be built on top of the presence of IM.

This is not a publishing medium, it’s communication. Whether you publish and subscribe, store and forward, use voice, text or avatar, you need one identity, one voice. IM will be open in Second Life as well as on the desktop.
When IM adds a store and forward component, email is dead and the game is over. Pure conversation.

Sharapova, Saratoga & Poitier

Well I’m off till Tuesday. Won’t be blogging much as I’ll be in Saratoga watching the races and Vermont relaxing in the Cabin.

Just watched Sharapova win at the U.S. Open and now I think I’ll catch a little,  “In the Heat of the Night“.

Bubble, Boom or Begin

I read a lot of interesting things today but had not much to say, except in comments.

Pretty lame since this guy had dental work and still out-posted me. What a trooper!

Tom Morris can produce code, opml and  blog posts with the best of them.

Hope you are feeling better Tom!

Well I’ve had a pint or two that haven’t worn off so I thought I’d post. Can I say something intelligent?

Maybe not, but I think the last few weeks signify not a bubble, but a new plateau.

People are understanding APIs, Web Services, mobile content, OPML, Social Networks and lots of old things in new ways.

I just don’t see a bubble bursting  when  ther is so much positive change stillneeded and finally happening.

Maybe it’s not a boom. But it’s not the end of something. It’s the beginning of a lot.

That’s neat Kent

Probably not something the whole world will rush out and buy but Kent Newsome showcases a neat USB turntable nonetheless.

Haven’t been paying attention, I guess. When did the technorati redesign happen?

Citizen Calacanis or Boss Jim Gettys?

Reading this post, it occurred to me that at one time everyone wanted to work for a newspaper.

Then everyone wanted to work for Microsoft.

Then Google.

Now everyone wants to work for Jason Calacanis (aka Charles Foster Kane)

[scary music] or is he Boss Jim Gettys?
